My Journey to Florida
By Hannah

It’s a 3 or 4 hour trip to Fort Meyers, Florida. That’s where we land when we go to Sanibel Island. We rent a car and drive across a bridge on a little of the ocean. Then we drive to our house. The house that we go to is just for our family and relatives. My great grandpa had the house built. It is just up the hill from the beach. One time when we were coming to the house from the beach, I saw a tortoise on the path. My mom said it was probably a Gopher Tortoise. I felt proud of myself because I spotted the tortoise. It was in the bushes then slowly walked across the path. We collect shells every day. Sometimes we go to “Ding” Darling. “Ding” Darling is a place where animals can come and go as they want. You can either go in your car or you can walk. We see Mango Tree Crabs, raccoons, alligators, and all sorts of birds. There are Anhinga, Egrets, Herons, and your everyday songbird. My dad teases me whenever we go there about falling into the swamp with alligators. Being in Florida makes me happy. I love the sound of the waves and the smell of the sea. I love having wildlife all around me. I love Florida.

Your essay makes me want to go right away to Florida. Especially in March in Minnesota! I can't wait for the warm weather. Thanks for the vision.

Hannah,

Our family visited Sanibel Island in early March this year. My husband's family and mine vacationed on Sanibel when we were children, and now that we are parents, we love to bring our children to Sanibel to experience the ocean, beautiful white sand beaches, shelling, wildlife, etc. You are so lucky your grandpa owns a home there that you can visit. My husband and I often wish our parents had bought property on Sanibel years ago when it was cheap. Ask Nicholas sometime about his walk to and from the lighthouse! I hope you continue to visit Sanibel; it's a special place!
